What happens during your appointment
We realise every patient has individual needs. A first appointment length is approximately 60 minutes.
A professional approach to your consultation may include:
Initial consultation
1. Administration & consent (5-10 minutes): Your psychiatrist will work hard to make you feel comfortable and secure and review confidentiality, fees, and cancellation policies.
2. Information Gathering (30-40 minutes): You will be asked about what brought you to therapy, current symptoms, personal history, relationships, and medical history.
3. Setting Goals & Treatment Plan (10 minutes): Together, you will define what you hope to achieve and discuss potential treatment approaches.
Ongoing sessions
Ongoing sessions are typically 30 minutes and may include:
1. Check-in & Review (5 minutes): Review the time since the last session, checking in on mood, and review progress plan and work on actions.
2. Main Discussion (20 minutes): Your psychiatrist will explore your specific issues or challenges. The psychiatrist will use this time to help you gain insights, develop new coping skills, and challenge negative thought patterns.
3. Closing & Next Steps (5 minutes): The session wraps up by summarising key takeaways, agreeing on tasks for the coming week, and scheduling your next appointment.
